Fine lines and wrinkles
These are caused by a number of factors, the most damaging being ageing, excessive sunshine, smoking and stress.
Ageing
Over time, your skin loses collagen and elastin, proteins which play a vital role in keeping it supple and smooth by giving it elasticity. They enable it to continually spring back to its original smoothness after you have laughed, frowned or adopted some other facial expression which causes it to wrinkle. With age, the ability of your body to replace the vital proteins is progressively reduced as is your skin’s elasticity.
Sunshine
The sun’s rays dry out your skin and, like ageing, reduce collagen and elastin - and another vital ingredient called hyaluronic acid which helps keep your skin moist and is also vital for elasticity.
Smoking
The tar and nicotine in cigarettes deprive skin of the nutrients and oxygen it needs for health and hinder the vital work of collagen and elastin. Recent research has revealed that smokers as young as 20 tend to already have a network of wrinkles under the surface of the skin which will inevitably make their way to the surface unless action is taken.
Stress
Frequent frowning, grimacing or screwing up your face will progressively etch lines onto it and you may end up with:
- deep forehead lines
- frown lines
- ‘bunny lines’ – deep wrinkles and lines at the top of your nose
- ‘naso-labial lines’ – prominent lines from your nose to your mouth
- ‘marionette lines’ – from the corners of your mouth downwards
