Signs of ageing

As you get older, your skin progressively loses elasticity because of the loss of proteins which help to keep it plump and smooth. You may begin to develop lines and wrinkles and your skin may start to look tired and begin to sag.

Other problems associated with ageing can include skin blemishes, such as ‘age spots’ and ‘liver spots’ as well as thinning of the lips which can lose their former fullness and sensuality. Also more common with age is finding unwanted hair starting to grow in the wrong places.

All these problems can be solved with our extensive range of treatments including glycolic peels, microdermabrasion and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL).

Lines and wrinkles

At first you may see only a growing network of wrinkles and fine lines but as time goes on these may deepen and become permanently etched while your skin can start to become baggy.

The underlying problem is that your skin progressively loses essential proteins called collagen and elastin which are responsible for your skin’s strength and elasticity. As collagen and elastin become depleted, your skin loses its ability to resume its original smooth appearance after distortion – wrinkles and lines which once appeared only fleetingly become permanently etched.

A second factor can be that your skin has lost moisture which it cannot adequately replace. The problem here is the loss of a natural fluid called hyaluronic acid. This plays an essential role in helping your skin retain moisture which is also essential for suppleness and smoothness. Put simply, it lubricates your skin, enabling it to spring back into place and regain its original smooth appearance. Without enough hyaluronic acid, the lines become permanent fixtures.

Treatments include glycolic peels, microdermabrasion, wrinkle filling and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) for fine lines and wrinkles, Restylane and Perlane for deeper lines.

Skin blemishes

‘Age spots’ and ‘liver spots’, usually thought of as the result of ageing, are actually the result of over-exposure to the sun. In order to protect itself from the sun’s rays, your skin produces an excess of the skin pigment melanin in particular places, usually first on the arms and hands, then on the face – and then less often on the chest, back or legs. These can be treated with Intense Pulsed Light which can lighten them or even remove them entirely.

Look younger in 24 hours

A wholesome diet, regular exercise, and other long-term good habits lay the foundation for a healthy glow. But sometimes you need to shine right away. The following fixes can help you turn back the clock in just 24 hours.

1. Touch Your Feet. Stimulating the pressure points on your feet reduces stress and if you're relaxed, you look younger.

2. Elevate Your Head with an extra pillow for 15 minutes before you get out of bed.

3. Chill Out. Cool your eyelids to eliminate puffiness with a refrigerated slice of cucumber or potato slice, or a chilled teaspoon on each closed lid for 10 to 15 minutes, any of these items will reduce puffy eyes.

4. Heal Hands. Before bedtime slather on a generous coat of moisturiser, slip on cotton gloves and sleep with them on. By morning, your hands will be baby soft and smooth.

5. Banish Bloat. Diuretic herbs like horsetail (Equisetum arvense) or dandelion root (Taraxacum officinale) can help you drop 3 to 5 pounds of water weight in a day. Take 12 drops of either in a cup of warm water two or three times a day. (Don't exceed these dosages.)
